What should an ideal Teacher be like?

Beyond Grammar: The Life of the English Language

The ideal English teacher is one who transcends the boundaries of conventional teaching, moving beyond constant repetitions and dictations in class to become a true creator of knowledge. This educator not only teaches but also inspires, motivates, and guides their students towards fluency in the language, making them live and feel English as an integral part of their being.

 

To talk about a teacher, we must define them in three essential parts that make up the qualities they must possess:

 

Empathy and Harmony: The first part involves putting oneself in the other’s shoes, thinking and feeling what the student finds difficult when learning or incorporating a new language foreign to their world. Imagine, for example, an indigenous child learning English; the confusion in adapting to our normal language and what it would be like to learn a different language from the perspective of a language that is not their own. Patience, discipline, and perseverance will be key in teaching anyone.

Innovation and Creativity: The ideal teacher is one who dares to leave behind traditional learning limited to memorization and repetition. This educator understands that true knowledge comes from creativity and innovation, using current tools and technology to create lessons that not only teach English but also ignite curiosity and the desire to explore the language beyond the classroom. If a teacher is creative, it will make the student think differently, incorporating curiosity for the new and calling interest in learning, which in turn motivates.

Knowledge and Practice of the Language with Ownership: A deep understanding of the language is essential, but what really distinguishes an ideal teacher is their ability to apply this knowledge in practical contexts. It’s not just about knowing grammar and vocabulary, but about how to use the language effectively in real situations, preparing students to use English confidently and competently in their daily lives. The ideal teacher is a master of language who can unravel the mysteries of grammar with clarity and precision, while demonstrating how these principles are applied in real conversations, effective writing, and deep understanding.

Finally, as the third and last quality, we have Adaptability and Personalized Strategies for each student. The ability to adapt to the individual needs of each student is an indispensable quality of the ideal English teacher. They recognize that each student has their own learning style and seek personalized strategies to ensure that everyone can reach their full potential. This may include the use of multimedia resources, interactive activities, or even adapting the pace of teaching to meet the needs of each student. Adaptability also means being prepared to face and overcome the challenges that arise in the classroom, whether it’s helping a student with specific difficulties or integrating emerging technologies into the curriculum.

 

For me, the ideal English teacher must be a person who inspires, motivates, and guides their students towards fluency in the language, who makes them live and feel the language. A teacher who prepares and motivates not only for exams or for the moment but to interact with the world in English with confidence, passion, and competence. A teacher who learns, and who teaches in the same way they would like to be taught; the teacher, beyond being the one who teaches, must allow themselves to be taught and change, adapt and constantly improve in order to take the student to improve and learn a language meaningfully and for life.
